On November 28th, 2018, China's Lum medicinal bathing of Sowa Rigpa was listed as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

The decision was announced during the 13th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Port Louis, Mauritius.

Speaking after the decision to inscribe this intangible cultural heritage on the list, Chinese Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism Zhang Xu said that Lum medicinal bathing of Sowa Rigpa has an important bearing on the everyday life of people of the Tibetan ethnic group.

"This heritage not only embodies the folk experience in disease prevention and treatment, it also represents an inheritance and development of the traditional Tibetan medicine theories in modern health practices," Zhang said.

In Tibetan, "Lum" indicates the traditional knowledge and practices of bathing in natural hot springs, herbal water or steam to adjust the balance of mind and body, to ensure health and treat illnesses.

The Lum Medicinal Bathing of Sowa Rigpa (Tibetan Medicine) has been developed by the Tibetan people with a life view based on Jungwa-nga (five elements) that includes Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Space, and a view about health and illness.

The knowledge and practices are widely distributed in areas inhabited by Tibetans in China's Tibet Autonomous Region as well as provinces including Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu and Yunnan, according to China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Approved by the State Council of the Chinese government, Lum medicinal bathing of Sowa Rigpa was included in the National List of Representative Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage on two occasions in 2008 and 2014.

A five-year safeguarding plan (2019-2023) has been made on the basis of a monitoring system so as to ensure coordinated safeguarding and development of the Tibetan tradition. Measures include special vocational training and increasing youth's awareness of safeguarding through compilation of primary and secondary school textbooks on related knowledge.

With the inscription of the Lum medicinal bathing of Sowa Rigpa, China now has 40 inscribed elements in total on relevant UNESCO lists, including 32 elements inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, 7 elements inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, and one program selected to the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices.

During the session of the intergovernmental committee, 40 requests for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity are being examined. Another seven elements are proposed for inscription on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

Dear Do***,

Greetings from Nancy at Budget Tibet Tour, thanks for visiting our website and sending your inquiry. Based on your requests, and I think I would like to recommend you to fly to Lhasa from Kathmandu then take the 15days group tour, as we do not have group tour starting from Kathmandu then head to Kailash from there. All group tours will start from Lhasa. We have the 15 Days Kailash Trekking back to Lhasa group tour on 12th Sept. and 3rd Oct. 2019, sorry we have not set up a tour to Guge yet, but if you take it as private tour, no problem about it, of course the fee for solo tourist would be quite costly in Sept or Oct. and on 3rd Oct we have one female who would like to share room. And I will forward you more details to your email. Best regards.

Hello,

I am writing you to get more information on your 5 days Lhasa and Yamdrok tour.

Especially I would like to know if you can confirm me the dates and prices mentioned on the website for the month of October 2019 (apparently 8 departures in the month, prices between 590 and 680USD depending if beginning or end of October?). Regarding the price, I would also like to know if it is possible to get cheaper ones if spending the night in a cheaper accomodation, such as guesthouse, instead of 3 star hotel.

I thank you in advance for all this information.
If I get interesting information, I might make my choice of date quite soon, before the end of May.

Best regards,

Dear Em***,

Greetings from Nancy at Budget Tibet Tour, thanks for visiting our website and sending your inquiry.

1) Based on your situation I would like to recommend you 6days Lhasa to Shigaste group tour which will cover Yamdrok Lake too as this tour we can run even if there are 1 people, because we can mix it to 8days Everest group tour and get back to Lhasa by train from Shigaste. As for the 5days Yamdrok Lake tour, we only can start it when they are at least 2 people.

2) You can book the hotel in Lhasa on your own, so I can cut the hotel fee in Lhasa for you, and in Shigaste we can arrange you the guest house which will be cheaper but there will be no breakfast and you can have it on your own with 10-20RMB for meal.

3) If you can come to Tibet after 15th Oct, which will be better as less cost on the tour. And I will give you the choice for the whole month. Right now we have the date on 1st Oct, 3rd Oct, 16th Oct and 24th Oct and all the dates have people booked.

And I will forward more details to your email. Best regards.
