Top 1. Mount Kailash

Kailash(entrance fee ¥300, environment bus fee¥110) is the center of the universe-or at least the Tibetan Buddist universe. In the Tibetan worldview, at the cosmic axis of the universe lies Mount Meru, the abode of the gods. Mount Kailash is thought to be an earthly manifestation of the mythical Meru. The Tibetan name for Kailash is “Kang Renpoche”-Precious Jewel of Snows: the dome-shaped peak is symmetrical like an uncut diamond, with a permanent cap of ice and snow.

Indian pilgrims pick up pebbles from the lakeside and fill containers with holy water when returning home. A 90km walking circuit around the lake takes about 4-5days, the route is perfectly flat and lies at 4,560m in altitude.

While Manasarovar is identified with positive forces of light( the sun), the lake next door, Raksas Tal(Known to Tibetan as Lhanag-tso, admission ticket ¥35)), is aligned with the forces of darkness( the moon). for this reason, Raksas Tal is shunned by pilgrims-its water rumoured to be poisonous(actually, they are not), as opposed to the healing waters of Manasarovar.

Top 4. Tholing Monastery

Tholing Monastery(Known as Tuolin Si, joint admission ticket with Tsaparang ¥200) was once most important monastic complex. Dates back to the 11th century when a structure was built by Yeshe O, the king of Guge. Top 5. Tsaparang(The ruins of Guge Kingdom)

Located 26km west of Zanda are the extensive ruins of Tsaparang (joint admission ticket with Tholing ¥200), the once-powerful capital of the 10th century Guge Kingdom(pronounced Goo-gay). The main building material is not stone, but clay, with walls, buildings, secret tunnels and escape exits all fashioned from this material. Little is known of the history of Guge Kingdom, but some of the exceptional murals at Tsaparang portray realistic scenes with courtiers and visiting dignitaries and give some idea of how people lived here in cave-dwellings in this kingdom of clay.

Top 6. Tirthapuri Hot Springs&Kora

Tirthapuri(admission fee ¥15)  is the other on the pilgrim’s “wish-list” after Kailash and Manasarovar Lake. The most revered site is Tirtapuri, a yellow-streaked rocky landscape with hot springs. After encircling Kailash and Manasarovar, Tibetan pilgrims come to Tirthapuri for a relaxing circuit-the kora is only an hour, and there are grassy meadows for picnicking as well as hot water for soothing tired limbs. It lies 10km southwest of Moincer, approached by land cruiser or truck. At the site, pilgrims bathe-or dip their feet-in several sulphurous hot-spring pools, which can accommodate three or four people. The hot springs are reputed to have healing powers, and Tibetans search the waters for pellets of lime, for medicinal purpose.
