Tibet is one of the most mysterious and spectacular places to visit. Lying on the world’s highest plateau, it boasts magnificent landscapes and beautiful cities, perfect both for backpacking adventurers and city-dwelling travelers.

While far away from the United States, Tibet is still one of the most affordable places to visit and can fit any budget. So, if you want to experience something completely different and exciting, while saving a few pennies, Tibet is the best place for you.

Let’s take a look at everything Tibet has to offer.

Before You Start

As a foreigner traveling to Tibet, you’ll need to get a Tibet permit. Independent traveling is not allowed there, so you’ll want to find a Tibet travel agency, and arrange your journey through that.

It might seem like a lot of hard work to apply for permits and await approval, but it’s actually much easier than it sounds. When you book a tour with a Tibet travel agency, your tour operator will handle all permits, and can even handle your accommodation, food, tours, and your overall travel inside Tibet.

If you’re more of an outdoorsy type who’d like to hike mountains and trek through different trails, you should check with your tour operator about the best seasons for those activities.

Travel Options to Tibet

If you travel to Tibet from China, you can decide whether you’d like to travel on a domestic flight or a train.

The plane is your fastest and most comfortable option, however, if you want to enjoy the view, opt for the train. A train offers cost-effective transportation for travelers on a budget, and you’re sure to enjoy the entire experience.

During your train ride, you’ll be traveling on the highest railroad in the world, and you’ll get to see spectacular scenery.

Most Notable Places to See

Tibet’s friendly people are highly religious, and you’ll see devout Buddhists, Hindus, and the followers of the Bon religion, among others. The importance of religion will be seen in Tibet’s buildings, as you’ll come across countless beautiful monasteries.

One that you should definitely visit is the Samye Monastery. Samye monastery is considered to be one of the most important monasteries in the Himalayas, and having been founded in the 8th century, it’s Tibet’s first monastery.

Lhasa

Lhasa is the capital of Tibet, and no journey would be complete without a visit to the capital. It’s a large city that you’ll enjoy exploring. You’ll get to visit amazing restaurants that serve traditional Tibetan food, go sightseeing, and more.

The most iconic structure in Lhasa is the Potala Palace which dominates the skyline. The Old Town in Lhasa is home to the Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s holiest temple, which will take your breath away.

Mt. Everest & Mt. Kailash

The north base camp of Mt. Everest in Tibet offers a spectacular view. The overland journey from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp is the most popular tour, and you won’t regret taking it.

Mount Kailash in Tibet

Dear Do***,

Greetings from Nancy at Budget Tibet Tour, thanks for visiting our website and sending your inquiry. Based on your requests, and I think I would like to recommend you to fly to Lhasa from Kathmandu then take the 15days group tour, as we do not have group tour starting from Kathmandu then head to Kailash from there. All group tours will start from Lhasa. We have the 15 Days Kailash Trekking back to Lhasa group tour on 12th Sept. and 3rd Oct. 2019, sorry we have not set up a tour to Guge yet, but if you take it as private tour, no problem about it, of course the fee for solo tourist would be quite costly in Sept or Oct. and on 3rd Oct we have one female who would like to share room. And I will forward you more details to your email. Best regards.

user portrait Mr. Em*** from: 5 Days Lhasa & Yamdrok Lake Hiking Tour

Hello,

I am writing you to get more information on your 5 days Lhasa and Yamdrok tour.

Especially I would like to know if you can confirm me the dates and prices mentioned on the website for the month of October 2019 (apparently 8 departures in the month, prices between 590 and 680USD depending if beginning or end of October?). Regarding the price, I would also like to know if it is possible to get cheaper ones if spending the night in a cheaper accomodation, such as guesthouse, instead of 3 star hotel.

I thank you in advance for all this information.
If I get interesting information, I might make my choice of date quite soon, before the end of May.

Best regards,

Dear Em***,

Greetings from Nancy at Budget Tibet Tour, thanks for visiting our website and sending your inquiry.

1) Based on your situation I would like to recommend you 6days Lhasa to Shigaste group tour which will cover Yamdrok Lake too as this tour we can run even if there are 1 people, because we can mix it to 8days Everest group tour and get back to Lhasa by train from Shigaste. As for the 5days Yamdrok Lake tour, we only can start it when they are at least 2 people.

2) You can book the hotel in Lhasa on your own, so I can cut the hotel fee in Lhasa for you, and in Shigaste we can arrange you the guest house which will be cheaper but there will be no breakfast and you can have it on your own with 10-20RMB for meal.

3) If you can come to Tibet after 15th Oct, which will be better as less cost on the tour. And I will give you the choice for the whole month. Right now we have the date on 1st Oct, 3rd Oct, 16th Oct and 24th Oct and all the dates have people booked.

And I will forward more details to your email. Best regards.
