How to Get to Lhasa from Xining

Xining is the only large city in Qinghai and is the capital of the province. Long established as a Chinese city, it's been a military garrison and trading centre since the 16th century. Nowadays, it's also a stopover for foreigners following the Qinghai-Tibet route, perched at an elevation of 2275m on the edge of the Tibetan plateau, the city itself has nothing exceptional to see, but is a convent staging post for visiting Ta'er monastery and Qinghai lake.

For most of tourists, they prefer taking train to Lhasa and enjoying the marvelous scenery of Qinghai-Tibet Railway. So taking train from Xining to Lhasa is a wise choice, Xining is the starting station of Qinghai-Tibet railway, and it only takes you about 21 hours, you will stay one night on the train. The highlight part is from Golmud to Lhasa. If your time is sufficient, spending two or three days visiting Xining or surrounding areas such as Ta’er monastery, Qinghai Lake, etc. After that, go westwards to Tibet by train.

How to get permit in Xining

If you fly from Xining to Lhasa, we will deliver original permit to your hotel by express, 1-7 days before your departure for Tibet. The original permit will be checked before getting your boarding pass to Lhasa. So please stay at least one night in Xining for your permit.

If you take train from Xining to Lhasa, a printed copy is enough. We will send the permit copy to you by email about 3-7 days before your departure date, then you need to print it out in color.

Please kindly note that the permit application usually take 20-25 days, which requires your copies of passport and Chinese visa. The earlier you provide required documents, the earlier we can get your permit. Please contact your consultant and confirm your tour early.

Xining to Lhasa by train

Xining is about 1972km far from Lhasa, which is the starting station of Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It takes you about 21 hours from Xining to Lhasa, you will see the snow peaks, gobi dessert, Tibetan yaks and the prairie along the way. The train travels from Xining, Golmud, Nagqu and Lhasa. The highlight is from Golmud to Lhasa. With enough time, plenty of tourists preferring travelling Qinghai Lake, Ta’er Monastery, then taking Xining - Lhasa train to Tibet. Note: The train departs from Xining train station (Jianguo Road, Chengdong District, Xining (城东区建国路). It’s about 11.5km away from Xining Airport to Xining Railway Station. You can take taxi to train station, which is more convenient.

Xining to Lhasa by flight

If your time is urgent, flying from Xining to Lhasa may be a better choice. When you arrive in Lhasa, after our guide send you to hotel, please do not rush to visit scenic spots, have a good rest on arrival day is necessary. Well, considering cost and tour experience, taking train from Xining to Lhasa is highly recommended.

Xining to Lhasa by flight

Note: Xining Airport is about 27km east of the city. There are two ways for tourists to reach the airport. The first way is to take airport shuttle buses. The second way is to take taxi, when you get into taxi, make sure the driver uses the meter.

Hello, we are considering to travel in Tibet in summer. We are a family of 5, two adults and three kids, age 13(then), 10, 8. We are interested in the 10 days Mt. EBC & Namtso Lake Group tour. We are US citizens with valid 10-year Chinese multiple entry visa, which we have applied when we went to Beijing in 2019. We are currently living in South Korea.

Travelling in Tibet is as safe for kids as it is for their parents. While the high Tibetan plateau may be the highest place on the planet, very often, the kids that visit this region are more adaptable and have fewer problems than their parents. We also have arranged wonderful Tibet tours for many families with kids such as a tour to EBC for a family with a 3-year-old son, a 9-year-old girl and a 11-year-old boy, they did have fun in Tibet and there is no problem for them. Or you can take some medicine under the guidance of doctor to prevent high altitude before enter Tibet. 2.
