Tibet Permit from Nepal

Across the world, there is only one direct international flight to Lhasa that departs from Kathmandu, Nepal; besides, the Chinese Customs at Zhangmu that borders Nepal is also the only Customs that allows international tourists to enter and exit Tibet by overland. So, there are many international tourists travelling to Tibet from Nepal each year due to this favorable situation. But, to enter Tibet from Nepal, the Tibet permit and Chinese visa process is totally a different story compared with entering Tibet from China proper. What follows is some fundamental and essential facts concerning how to get all documents processed in a right and quick way.

Fact 1: It's useless to obtain a Chinese tourists visa in your own country or any other third country; the Chinese Group Visa issued by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu is the only valid voucher for you to travel to Tibet from Kathmandu, Nepal.

Fact 2: You cannot apply for the Chinese Group Visa by yourself at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. It will be a visa agent (or a travel company) in Kathmandu who will help you to apply for the visa; you even do not have to show up at the Embassy.

Fact 3: Tibet tour operator will send a Chinese visa invitation letter to the visa agent in Kathmandu that helps you to get the visa into Tibet. To get this letter, all you have to do is to send your Tibet tour operator the scan copy of your passport, 15 days in advance.

Fact 4: You will also have to meet the visa agent in Kathmandu to fill the visa application form, make sure to bring a passport-size photocopy of yourself. The visa agent can submit the visa application form from Monday till Friday (10 AM-2PM), but the visa can only be issued on each Monday, Wednesday and Friday which are known as group visa working days.

Fact 5: Chinese group visa (Tibet visa) fee depends on your nationality and also how soon you need it (how many working days it takes); what follows in the table is the group visa fee standard charged by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.

  Normal Urgent Top Urgent
US Citizens USD 140 p/p USD 155 p/p USD 175 p/p
Canadian Citizens USD 120 p/p USD 135 p/p USD 155 p/p
Romanian Citizens USD 80 p/p USD 90 p/p USD 115 p/p
Other Citizens USD 50 p/p USD 65 p/p USD 85 p/p

Note that the above fee in the table is the price charged by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu only, the visa agent in Kathmandu generally charges an amount of visa application service fee too about USD 20 per person.
