The straight-line distance from Lhasa to Tibet Everest Base Camp is about 450 kilometers. Up to now, there are no direct flights, trains or public buses from Lhasa to EBC. The most common way to travel from Lhasa to EBC is by vehicles, there are about 600 kilometers overland distance which takes two days regularly. First day you go to Shigatse (the second largest city in Tibet, 280km west of Lhasa) and the second day from Shigatse to the EBC. It’s also possible to travel by train from Lhasa to Shigatse and after that by vehicle to the EBC.
For international tourists want to visit Mt. Everest Base Camp in Tibet, they must book a Tibet Mt. Everest Tour with a local tour operator who provides vehicle service plus guide, permit, hotel and etc.
Also, tourists can travel to Tibet Mt. Everest Base Camp by vehicle from Kathmandu (Nepal) via the Gyirong Port at China-Nepal border. From this direction, tourists have to stay at least Gyirong Town (2900m) for one night and another night at Old Tingri (4200m) to acclimatize them before reaching EBC, because the altitude from Kathmandu to EBC increases very sharply from about 1350 meters to 5200 meters.
It has to be mentioned that Tingri (Shegar) is the closest town from the EBC with a hospital. It’s about 100km from the Base Camp and in case of an emergency people have to be driven there to get medical care. The road from Tingri to EBC is quite good, but still takes around 3 hours because too many bends on the way.

Hi, I plan to arrive in Lhasa on the 9th of March in 2020 by train and would like to do a 4 day tour. Unfortunately there are no tours scheduled between January and April, will there be tours added or are there not any planned?
Kind regards
Julian Franz
