How far is from Kathmandu to China-Nepal border? How much it costs by a taxi?
Answer: Kathmandu is only 170 KM away from (Gyirong) border, but the road is quite zigzag through the mountains, generally it takes about 8-9 hours by a taxi. For such a drive, it normally costs, USD 200 per car (6-8 passengers)
When does the Chinese border at Gyirong open and close each day?
Answer: It opens at 10:00 AM (GMT+8) and closes at 5:30 PM (GMT+8), note that Nepal time is 2.15 hours behind the (GMT+ 8) time, so please arrange your departure time from Kathmandu accordingly in case of late arrival that may cause unable to check in China side. We advise you to leave Kathmandu at 5 or 6 AM (local time), by the time when you arrive at Chinese border; it will be about 2 or 3 PM (local time).
How can we meet our guide and driver at border?
Answer: After you finishing your immigration formalities at the Chinese borer side, one Chinese border army will lead you to the guide-wait areas where your guide will be picking you up. There will be no name board; our guide has to show the permit to the army that proves you the right person our guide is picking up.
Do I have to apply for any other permit or visa if I continue my visit towards China after a tour in Tibet?
Answer: No, the Chinese group visa obtained in Kathmandu is for the whole China including Tibet. The valid stay of such a visa is generally about 20 days, including Tibet. If you use 8 days in Tibet, and you only have 12 left for China; plus it's impossible to extend this kind of visa while in Tibet or China, so please make your schedule accordingly.
Is there ATM at border that I can withdraw some Chinese currency or can I use US dollars?
Answer: No, there is no any ATM at Gyirong town that you can withdraw cash, neither US dollars nor Nepalese Rupees is used in China; we advise you to exchange some Chinese currency while in Kathmandu, it's very easy as there are just many official exchange booths. Also, in Gyirong, there are some individuals doing this business too, but not as convenient and safe as in Kathmandu.
