Day1: Arrive in Lhasa

Arrival & Pick-up in Lhasa and Acclimatization
Schedule today: Arrival at train station or airport in Lhasa, our guide and driver will pick you up and transfer you to hotel for acclimatization; you can have your free time hanging out at this holy city to get the first impression of Tibet.

Day 2: Lhasa city tour

Highlights: Potala Palace, Johkang Temple, Backhor Street

Schedule today:
In the morning, visit the symbol or landmark of Lhasa-Potala Palace (Video), the successive Dalai Lama's winter residence. In the afternoon, visit the center of Tibetan Buddhism-Jorhkang Temple (Video), where you will come across lots of devoted pilgrimages coming from every corner of Tibet. Both sites are under the list of the world cultural heritages by the UNISCO. Afterwards, free time for you to wander through the Backhor Street, the busiest street in old Lhasa quarter. One welcome dinner will be given for free today; you will have a chance to taste the most genuine local Tibetan food and drinks.

Day 3: Lhasa city tour

In the morning, we will drive out of Lhasa to have a short tour to Dark Yerpa Hermitage (Video) that is seen as the holiest cave retreat ever, there is a saying that 'Lhasa is the shrine of Tibet, Drak Yerpa is the shrine of Lhasa. Not seeing Drak Yerpa in Lhasa is just like making a dress without the collar. And in the afternoon, we will visit another influential Gelugpa Monastery-Sera Monastery (Video), where the largest scale of scripture debating (Video) among monks is famous all across Tibet.

Day 4: Lhasa-Gyantse (270 km/ 6-7 hours)

Highlights: Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Kumpa Stupa, Pelcho Monastery

In the morning, drive to the historic town of Gyantse via Yamdrok Lake, according to local mythology, Yamdrok Lake (Video) is the transformation of a goddess, on the Gangbala Pass, you will have a clear picture of this Tibetan holy lake in turquoise, in distance you can also see the snowcapped Summit of Ninjingkangsang. Then we drive along the turquoise holy lake and snowcapped mountains, the views are just stunning(Video). On the way, we will stop to visit the Karola Glacier before arriving in the ancient town of Gyantse (Video) where you will find the largest stupa in Tibet-Kumpa Stupa (Ten-thousand stupa), just next to the Stupa is the Pelcho Monastery. Day 5: Gyantse-Shigatse-Tingri (300 km/ 8 hours)

Schedule today:
In the morning, visit Tashilumo Monastery (Video) which is the seat of Panchen Lama, the equally important religious figure in Tibet as Dalai Lama. The monastery was built by the first Dalai Lama in 1447, and inside the Monastery placed the highest statue of Buddha in Tibet which is 26.8 meters high. In the morning, your guide will also go to government office to apply for another permit for EBC for you, which may take 1 to 2 hours. Afterwards, drive along the well paved highway from Shigatse to Tingri (shegar) (Video); before sunset, we will visit ruins of Shegar Dzong (Video) perched on the mountain, the ruins used to be the capital administration center of Tingri region and it's also a good point to view the Himalayas. Besides the ruins, you could also visit the small and cozy shegar Chode Monastery built in the 13th century.

Day 6: Tingri-Rongbuk Monastery-EBC (110 km, 5 hours on wheel)

Schedule today:
In the morning, drive to Mt. Everest Nature Reserve, the driving distance is not long today but road is unpaved and very bumpy (Video); if weather permits, on the top of the Gyalpo-la pass you can see the beautiful peaks of 4 highest mountains over 8000 meters (Mt. Everest; Mt. Makalu; Mt. Lotse; Mt. Cho Oyu) in the world at the same time, what a great picture. Before arriving at the EBC, you will first visit the highest monastery in the world-Rongbuk Monastery, which is also a good position to watch the Everest. It's about 2 PM today when we arrive at campsite near the EBC, so we have really lots of time exploring the area while waiting for the excieting moment when the golden sunset strikes the peak of Mt. Everest, the Sunset Views Over Mt. Everest (Video) are much more amazing than the sunrise views, you cannot afford missing this holy moment if you are planning a Mt. Everest tour.

Day 7: EBC-Old Tingri-Zhangmu (310 km, 7-8 hours on wheel)

Schedule today:
Get up early in the morning to view sunrise over Mt. Everest if you are interested about this, the sunrise time is about 6:40 AM, cold outside, make sure you wear warm cloth do to this. After breakfast, we will continue up to EBC by green bus (this can be done too yesterday if you like), we will just hike to the sightseeing platform for EBC, the platform is the nearest point we can get close to EBC, we will do a short hike there and go back after taking photo. Finally, continue our journey on the bumpy but amazing off-the-beaten track (Video) to Zhangmu via Old Tingri. Today we will stay at Zhangmu, the border town of both Nepalese and Chinese style.

Day 8: Zhangmu-Nepal (border transfer)

In the morning after breakfast, your guide will help you go through border formality and you can You can cross the border bridge and check in Nepal side, Nepal visa is available upon arrival with 25USD, please prepare one photo of passport size to get Nepal Visa. Next step, you need to find a car or bus towards Kathmandu, 50ms ahead from border bridge, dozens of car or bus are parking there to pick up travelers; about 3000 Nepali Rupee for a taxi rental or 50 Nepali Rupee(Appro.1USD) for a bus seat. Taxi will be a good choice for you.

Like when entering a chicken farm, Fred and I felt slightly amused when we boarded our Lhasa bound train in Chengdu.
